New Zealand: Otago regional council triples insurance cover for harbor incidents

The Otago Regional Council has increased its harbor master and wreck insurance nearly three times to 20 million New Zealand ($17 million) from $7.5 million New Zealand ($6.3 million) to cover for any "Rena-type" incidents, Otago Daily Times reported.

The grounding of MV Rena on the Astrolabe Reef in 2011 led to spillage of oil, fuel and debris into the sea.

The council's corporate services director Wayne Scott said the insurance was looked at by a broker for the 2014-15 period with a 2.7% drop in its rates.
