BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

EEOC charges City Colleges of Chicago with age discrimination

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has filed an age discrimination lawsuit against a City Colleges of Chicago community college for allegedly failing to hire an adjunct professor for a full-time faculty position because of her age.

The EEOC said Thursday that Harold Washington College, which is part of the City Colleges of Chicago system, refused to hire Nancy Sullivan because she is 66, in violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.

EEOC district director John Rowe said in the EEOC’s statement that Ms. Sullivan had worked as an adjunct professor in the English department at the college for five years before applying for the full-time faculty position.

“What we discovered was that Sullivan had the credentials, had compiled an excellent record during her tenure as an adjunct and had enthusiastic recommendations from several full-time members of the faculty. She looked like a perfect fit for the job, yet was passed over in favor of younger, less-experienced candidates. That’s age discrimination,” said Mr. Rowe, in a statement.

A college spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.
