Typhoon Matmo has claimed 13 lives in China and has caused direct economic losses of 3.37 billion Chinese yuan ($544.2 million), the Ministry of Civil Affairs said.

The storm destroyed crops and damaged houses, The Associated Press reported.

The rough weather associated with the typhoon is thought to be the likely cause of a recent plane crash in Taiwan.
