Direct economic losses from disasters total $116 billion in 2013

Figures released by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction suggest that major disasters during 2013 resulted in direct economic losses of $116 billion, Xinhua reported.

Around 315 disasters claimed 22,000 lives during the year.

More than half of the total death toll from disasters occurred in the Philippines, Japan, India, Pakistan and China.
