India: Industrial units in West Bengal fined for polluting rivers

West Bengal's environment department has taken action against 85 industrial units for polluting the rivers, The Hindu reported.

The state's Environment Minister Sudarshan Ghosh Dastidar said "18 (companies) have been closed down," pollution cost has been imposed on 11 and "56 have been asked to provide bank guarantee."

Most of the units are situated on the river banks and are yet to set up sewage treatment plants, reports The Hindu.
