Canada to increase liability for oil spills

Canada's Transport Minister Lisa Raitt has said the government is to increase the liability for a company having an oil spill to $400 million Canadian ($367.1 million) per spill from CAD 161 million ($147.8 million) currently, reported

This would mean that CAD 1.6 billion ($1.47 billion) would be available for clean-up activities and compensation, taking into account the ship owner's insurance and other funds.

Ms. Raitt said the government will also lift rules that set limits on what can be used for clean-up works,
