Temple University students win inaugural risk management challenge

A team of students from Temple University has won the inaugural Spencer-RIMS Risk Management Challenge.

The Temple University team of four risk management students competed against teams from 15 other universities, delivering the winning presentation Wednesday before 100 risk management professionals during the annual conference of the Risk & Insurance Management Society Inc. in Denver.

Fifteen teams competed in the challenge in which each was asked to develop a program to address a risk management case study. Nine teams were invited to attend this years RIMS conference with the field narrowed during the conference to three teams who made final presentations on the conference’s last day.

The winning Temple University team included Cathleen Gabriel, Williams Thorsson, Marin Leicht and Steven Costa. The team’s academic advisor was Michael McClosky. A team from Florida State University finished second, and a team from Virginia Commonwealth University was third.

Temple University was awarded $4,000 for finishing first, while Florida State received $3,000 for its second place finish and Virginia Commonwealth was awarded $2,000 for finishing third.

The Spencer Educational Foundation Inc. provided a grant to fund the Risk Management Challenge.
