DENVER — Attendees of the Risk & Insurance Management Society Inc.'s 2014 conference and exhibition gathered Sunday afternoon at Savio House in Denver to help the nonprofit perform several maintenance projects on its campus.

The event was part of RIMS' annual Community Service Day, sponsored by Zurich North America. Savio House teaches parents how to properly care for their children after protective service agencies have been asked to deal with cases of child abuse or neglect.

About 50 RIMS participants helped with various maintenance and landscaping projects at Savio House, including painting rooms and placing mulch around fences at the charity.“We're a community project, and so this sort of volunteer work is critical to our mission,” said Savio House Executive Director William S. Hildenbrand, adding that RIMS and Zurich also provided clothing and toiletry donations. “These volunteers come and do so many great things and they always do a professional job.”

Dan Riordan, CEO of global corporate for Zurich North America, worked with a team of volunteers to prune rose bushes on Savio House's front lawn.

He said RIMS Community Service Day allows RIMS members to help people in need.

“I think it's great for RIMS because it demonstrates that RIMS is not just about having a big meeting,” Mr. Riordan said. “It's about other ways that we can support the industry and other ways that we can support communities.”

Lori See, risk finance manager for CHE Trinity Health in Livonia, Mich., and Stephanie Tutt, corporate senior risk analyst for Computer Sciences Corp. in Denver, worked together to prepare posters for Savio House's weight room. Both said they participated in Community Service Day to aid Denver-area residents.

“Being local, I wanted to do something to give back to the community,” Ms. Tutt said.

“Since (RIMS is) such a large organization and we tend to come in with 10,000 people … it's nice to be able to show the city appreciation … and help build the community up.”

Along with the Savio House event, RIMS and Zurich will hold a volunteer project during the conference to benefit the Resource Area for Teaching in Denver. The nonprofit, based in San Jose, Calif., provides classroom materials for teachers at discounted prices.

RIMS conference attendees will be able to assemble math and science teaching kits for the teachers resource group during an all-day event inside the conference exhibit hall on Tuesday.
