Powerful earthquake strikes off Papua New Guinea

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off Papua New Guinea on Apr. 19 2014, prompting a tsunami warning to be issued briefly for that country and the nearby Solomon Islands, Reuters reported.

The United States Geological Survey said the quake hit 68 kilometers southwest of Panguna on Bougainville island.

In a span of one week, at least six strong tremors were felt near Bougainville.

Jonathan Bathgate, seismologist at Geoscience Australia, said the spate of earthquakes is "relieving some pressure on this fault line, but we can't rule out another large earthquake."
