The World Meteorological Organization said 2013 was the sixth-warmest year on record and 13 of the 14 warmest years on record have all occurred in the 21st century, The Associated Press reported.

Michel Jarraud, secretary-general of the United Nations agency, said Typhoon Haiyan caused $13 billion in damage to the Philippines and Vietnam, while Typhoon Fitow in China and Japan caused $10 billion in damage.

Mr. Jarraud said other costly disasters include $10 billion in damage from drought in much of China and $22 billion in damage from central European flooding.
