Michael Smith has been named chief operating officer of the commercial insurance business of American International Group Inc., the company said in a statement Tuesday.
Mr. Smith most recently served as president of global financial lines for AIG. Before that, he was AIG’s president of executive liability. He will report to John Q. Doyle, CEO of global commercial insurance, and succeeds Robert Thomas, who had served as the commercial insurance chief operating officer since 2011.
Mr. Thomas, in turn, has been named president of global specialty lines and will also report to Mr. Doyle. He succeeds James Shea.
Mr. Shea will succeed Mr. Smith as president of global financial lines for AIG and will also report to Mr. Doyle. Mr. Shea began his career with AIG’s National Union Fire Insurance Co. of Pittsburgh, Pa. unit in New York.
“Mike, Jim, and Bob are experienced and highly effective executives, each of whom has experience leading global businesses,” said Mr. Doyle in a statement. “We have continued to progress towards our vision to become our customers’ most valued insurer, and I am confident that these changes will further enable us to do so, bringing new perspective and expertise to our clients and distribution partners worldwide.”
All the executives are based in New York.
