Chex Xiwen, deputy director of China's top agricultural authority, said farmland near rivers could be taken out of production if there is a risk of pollution from the use of pesticides and fertilizers, The Guardian reported.

The vice minister of land and resources said an estimated 3.3 million hectares of land is polluted. The environmental protection ministry said heavy metals pollute an estimated 12 million tons of grains every year.
