The city of Curitiba is at risk of being scrapped as a World Cup venue unless construction work at the Arena da Baixada stadium shows significant signs of speeding up, a World Cup official said.

While six stadiums in Brazil finished construction in 2013, the remaining six missed the Dec. 31 2013 deadline imposed by the Federation Internationale de Football Association, Bloomberg reported.

The delays at the Curitiba stadium pushed up the costs to renovate the stadium by 44%.
