South Africa: Strikes may hit global platinum output

Around 70,000 miners plan to go on strike on Jan. 23 2014 at mines in South Africa's platinum belt run by Anglo American Platinum Ltd., Impala Platinum Ltd. and Lonmin P.L.C., Bloomberg reported.

The region accounts for around 70% of global output of platinum.

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union president Joseph Mathunjwa said the union will serve strike notices at the country's gold firms.
