The legislative assembly in Sao Paulo, Brazil, has passed a bill aimed at reducing cargo theft by introducing penalties for the sale or receipt of stolen goods.
A report by FreightWatch International Inc. said that for years Brazil has been a hot spot for cargo theft, and recently criminals seem to be eyeing high-value shipments, particularly pharmaceuticals, Security Industry reported. The report said that during the first 10 months of 2013 there were 229 thefts in which goods worth an estimated $442 million were stolen. About 60% of the total thefts took place in Sao Paulo.
