Japan: Nuclear power plants at risk if volcanoes erupt

Hideyuki Ito, associate professor at Iwate Prefectural University, said several of Japan's nuclear power plants are at "high risk" because they are situated in regions that could be affected by lava flows, Mainichi reported.

Akita University's Shintaro Hayashi said in a survey that the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant carries "unacceptable risks." Blasts of scalding air could result in volcanic ash falling in a wide area, clogging water intakes and vents and cutting power lines at the power plants, and hampering reactor cooling.
