Australian court imposes $1.1 million fine on coal-ship's owners for 2010 oil spill

The German owners of Liberia-registered vessel MV Magdalene have been asked to pay a $1.2 million Australian ($1.1 million) fine for an August 2010 oil spill near the Port of Newcastle, The Newcastle Herald reported.

The fine, imposed by the New South Wales Land and Environment Court, is in addition to the $1.7 million Australian ($1.5 million) in clean-up costs already paid.

Proceedings in the court said the main cause of the leak was a rust hole between two tanks.
