Kazakhstan: CNPC ordered to pay $50 million for environmental damage, fines

China National Petroleum Corp.'s Kazakhstani subsidiary JSC CNPC-AktobeMunaiGas has been ordered to pay 7.7 billion Kazakhstani tenge ($49.8 million) for breaching the country's environmental laws and causing environmental damage, Tengrinews reported.

This includes KZT 5.3 billion ($34.3 million) in environmental damages from excessive gas flaring and an administrative fine of KZT 2.4 billion.The Environmental Prosecutor's Office of Aktobe Province reported excessive gas flaring "at Kenkiyak and Oktyabr oil and gas production departments and at Zhanazhol refineries."
