BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

VICTORIA, British Columbia — Janet Stein, director of risk management and insurance for the University of Calgary, has received the Donald M. Stuart Award, Canada's highest honor in the risk management field.

The award was presented Tuesday during the 39th annual Risk & Insurance Management Society Canada Conference, being held in Victoria, British Columbia.

Ms. Stein worked in the university's emergency operations center during the summer floods in Calgary, Alberta. In addition, she has analyzed and implemented a variety of risk management programs for the institution that include the creation of the university's first master emergency response plan and one of the first university risk management websites in Canada. And she participated on a provincial committee during the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic to create specific guidelines for students working in health care facilities.

During her acceptance speech, Ms. Stein described how the university responded to the needs of flood victims during the Calgary floods.

“We closed down, but we opened our doors and our hearts to help the community,” she said, housing approximately 1,100 evacuees in student residences that were vacated for the summer.

To help home and business owners address insurance questions, the university's business school and risk management program also collaborated on an informational website that received more than 160,000 hits, Ms. Stein said.

During her career, Ms. Stein has held numerous leadership positions on local, national and international RIMS committees and serves as chair of the new RIMS Canada Council Centralized Conference Programming Committee, which works with local organizing committees on the educational components of RIMS Canada conferences.

In 2011, she was a co-recipient of the Les B. Strickler Innovation in Instruction Award from the American Risk and Insurance Association for her work assisting in the development of a University of Calgary MBA course that included experiential learning for the students in an emergency operations center environment.

“Janet's professionalism, superior risk management knowledge and unmatched experience has enabled her to help guide her institution and work with the Province of Alberta through some of the most complex and devastating challenges in recent history,” Suzanne Barrett, president of RIMS' Ontario chapter, said in a statement. “In addition to her extraordinary professional achievements, she has shown a steadfast commitment to our industry, dedicating countless hours to educating tomorrow's risk management leaders.”

Also presented at the conference was the annual Fred H. Bossons Award, which honors the risk management professional who earns the highest marks on the three courses required to receive the Canadian Risk Manager designation.

This year’s winner was Philip Samuel Mouser, assistant vice president at Marsh Canada Ltd. in Toronto.
