China: Shanghai to extend food safety insurance scheme

Shanghai's Municipal Food Safety Committees is asking food-serving companies to purchase insurance to cover diners suffering food poisoning, Global Times reported.

Shanghai's food authorities plan to expand a food safety insurance scheme to cover baby milk powder producers, company canteens and student lunch suppliers, Shanghai Morning Post reported. Food suppliers that are considered to be at high risk will be required to join the scheme. The Shanghai Food and Drug Administration said there were seven cases of food poisoning in 2012 that affected around 140 people.
