The level of U.S. cargo thefts dropped from February through April compared with the previous three month-period, although it is unclear at this time whether this is because of an actual decline or a change in the reporting structure, according to FreightWatch International (USA) Inc.
FreightWatch said in a report distributed Wednesday that it recorded 176 thefts in the United States from February through April. This was a 16% drop from the December-through-February period, while the average loss value per incident dropped 31% to $120,990 during that time.
Food and drink, with 47 thefts, was the product type stolen most often during the period, accounting for 27% of incidents.
Texas had the most cargo thefts, with 29, followed by Florida, with 27.
Unsecured parking, with 107 thefts that accounted for 75% of the total, was the location cargo thieves targeted most often when a location was reported, FreightWatch said.
The most common incident involved stealing a trailer, which accounted for 112 thefts and 64% of the total.
A report issued last month said there were 188 cargo theft incidents in the United States from December 2012 through February, which was 25% less than last year’s fourth quarter.
