Nigeria: Agencies demand oil spill compensation of $11.5 billion from Shell

Two Nigerian government agencies have demanded that oil giant Royal Dutch Shell P.L.C pay $11.5 billion in compensation for an oil spill that took place at offshore Bonga field in December 2011, Reuters reported.

Shell has taken accountability for the oil spill, but says there is no legal basis for the proposed fines. The oil giant claims that onshore damage was the result of a different spill, that wasn't its fault. Shell has received over 300 claims letters, Chike Onyejekwe, managing director of Shell's offshore Nigeria unit, said.
