The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday said it has given conditional approval to Iowa, Michigan, New Hampshire and West Virginia to partner with HHS to run health insurance exchanges.
That brings to seven the number of states whose partnership agreements have received conditional HHS approval.
HHS already has given conditional approval to partnership applications filed by Arkansas Delaware and Illinois.
Altogether, these seven states are projected to have about 722,000 enrollees in the partnership exchanges next year, according to health care consultant Avalere Health L.L.C. in Washington.
In addition, 16 states and the District of Columbia have received conditional HHS approval to operate marketplaces. In the 27 states that have declined to set up their own exchanges or enter into partnership agreements, HHS will set up exchanges, which millions of uninsured Americans will use starting next year to obtain coverage with Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act-authorized premium subsidies.
The U.S. Health and Human Services Department on Wednesday granted conditional approval to Illinois' application to establish a health insurance exchange run jointly by the state and federal governments.
