BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

University of Colorado campuses amend housing contracts for concealed weapons

In response to a March Colorado Supreme Court ruling, the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Colorado Colorado Springs have amended their student housing contracts to address students who live in university residence halls and carry valid Colorado concealed weapons permits.

In a statement issued Thursday regarding its new policy, CU-Boulder said it will accommodate students holding Colorado concealed carry permits in off-campus graduate housing provided they store their weapon in a safe in their dwelling when not carrying it.

The policy also asks students living in undergraduate residence halls who hold Colorado concealed weapons permits not to bring handguns to campus. Residence hall students may store weapons at the University of Colorado Police Department on campus.

The university is asking residence advisers and faculty who live in university housing to sign the same housing contract.

Under concealed carry, students with permits may carry concealed handguns on campus generally and into CU-Boulder buildings, though the university's statement noted that guns will not be allowed into ticketed athletic events or other ticketed performances. The ticket purchase constitutes an agreement with the university not to carry concealed weapons into the venue, the university said.

The policy announced Thursday by the University of Colorado Colorado Springs provides that students will be contractually barred from carrying handguns in housing designated for freshmen or into large campus events including athletic events.

Options for students with permits who wish to live in campus housing include storing weapons with campus police or, if they live in non-freshman housing, locking the weapon in an approved gun safe when it's not being carried, a UCCS statement said.

Among the requirements for a Colorado concealed carry permit are that the holder be 21 or older, complete an FBI background check, and have either previous military or police experience or proof of completion of a firearms training course.

In March, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that individuals with state-issued concealed carry permits were allowed to carry handguns on university or college properties. The University of Colorado Board of Regents subsequently directed the chancellors of the Boulder and Colorado Springs campuses to develop processes to implement the ruling in student residences.
