OAKLAND, Calif.—A series of tornadoes that struck parts of Michigan last week caused less than $100 million in insured damage, according to catastrophe modeler EQECAT Inc.
Oakland, Calif.-based EQECAT said the most damaging of Thursday's tornadoes touched down in Michigan's Washtenaw County. Others touched down in Lapeer and Monroe counties. Collectively, the tornadoes destroyed at least 13 houses and damaged more than 100 more, said EQECAT in its analysis.
“This event represents an early start for tornadoes in the upper Midwest, compared to a typical start to the tornado season in May,” said EQECAT.
EQECAT said this month that the unusually violent and early tornado season caused as much as $2 billion in insured damage by early March.
