Lawsky confirmed as chief insurance, banking regulator for New York

NEW YORK—The New York state Senate unanimously confirmed Benjamin M. Lawsky as the superintendent of the state’s new banking and insurance regulator, New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Tuesday.

Mr. Lawsky will head the Department of Financial Services, which Gov. Cuomo recently created by merging the New York State Banking Department and the New York State Department of Insurance.

Mr. Lawsky is currently the governor’s chief of staff. Before that, he served as the deputy counselor and special assistant throughout the administration of then-Attorney General Cuomo.

“Ben’s deep understanding of complex markets, evolving financial products, and consumer protection uniquely enables him to safeguard investors while maintaining a vibrant marketplace in New York,” Mr. Cuomo said in a statement.

James J. Wrynn, currently superintendent of the New York Insurance Department, is expected to become Mr. Lawsky’s deputy. Mr. Cuomo had announced his nomination of Mr. Lawsky on May16.

“New York’s businesses and consumers deserve the leanest, most efficient, and most effective financial services regulator in the nation,” Mr. Lawsky said in the statement Tuesday.
