WASHINGTON—A House panel has set a hearing to examine the safety of the U.S. egg supply due to an outbreak of salmonella.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations said Wednesday that it will hold the hearing in Washington on Sept. 14.
The hearing is in response to the recent outbreak of salmonella associated with eggs from Galt, Iowa-based Quality Egg L.L.C., which does business as Wright County Egg, and New Hampton, Iowa-based Hillandale Farms, the committee said in its announcement.
The committee’s chairman—Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif.—and the subcommittee’s chairman—Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich.—sent letters Tuesday to the Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Agriculture requesting documents and information relating to the egg recall and other matters dating back to the beginning of 2007.
Previously, the congressmen also requested documents about the salmonella outbreak from the two egg producers.
