A Wisconsin priest may have God on his side, but he had Best Buy Co. beating on his door when the electronics retail giant ordered him to stop driving his Volkswagen Beetle with his God Squad logos on it.
Best Buy issued a cease-and-desist letter this month to the Rev. Luke Strand of Holy Family Parish in Fond du Lac, Wis., advising him to remove the God Squad logos from his car as they closely resembled the logo for Best Buy's Geek Squad, the store's mobile troubleshooting unit that also drives Volkswagen Beetles.
The Rev. Strand told reporters it was his creative way of spreading his faith to others and he did not intend to violate Best Buy's trademark.
Richfield, Minn.-based Best Buy told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that it appreciated what the Rev. Strand was trying to do, but also said he was violating the company's trademark.
The Rev. Strand got the message and has removed the logos from his car.
A spokeswoman for Best Buy told the Milwaukee newspaper that the company was working with the priest to revise the God Squad design so it does not infringe the distinctive look of Best Buy's black, orange and white Geek Squad logo.
