Tropical storm Agatha insured losses minimal: AIR

June 1, 2010 - 12:11pm

GUATEMALA CITY—Tropical storm Agatha dumped more than a foot of rain in some parts of Central America and left at least 150 dead, but resulted in minimal insured losses, according to AIR Worldwide Corp.

The first storm of the eastern Pacific hurricane season also left thousands homeless as the storm caused landslides and widespread damage in Central America, authorities said. It was “unlikely” that much of the affected property had insurance, according to the Boston-based risk modeling firm.

The storm made landfall near Guatemala’s border with Mexico on Saturday with wind speeds of 45 mph, according to AIR, before turning into a tropical depression early Sunday. Agatha brought heavy rain that drenched Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, which triggered flooding and mudslides that washed out roads and several small communities, including homes and businesses.

Guatemala was hit hardest, with officials reporting 123 dead and at least 90 missing. A sinkhole in Guatemala City swallowed a three-story building.
