HAMILTON, Bermuda—Everest Re Group Ltd. made a preliminary estimate Thursday that its loss related to the earthquake in Chile is $225 million and its loss from Windstorm Xynthia in Europe is $25 million.
Everest Re's estimates were based on underwriters' preliminary analysis, client input, event modeling and profiling of exposed limits, the Hamilton, Bermuda-based reinsurer said in a statement.
The latest estimates of insurance industry losses range from $4 billion to $10 billion from the massive earthquake in Chile and $2 billion to $4 billion for Windstorm Xynthia in Europe, both in late February.
In the statement, Everest Re said it will be several months before a total emerges, and that loss estimates may need to be adjusted as more information becomes available.
