Labor Department appoints 5 to ERISA Advisory Council

WASHINGTON—Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis said Friday that five new members have been appointed to the Labor Department’s ERISA Advisory Council.

The 15-member council provides advice to the Labor Department secretary on issues affecting employee benefit plans.

The new members include Jack Towarnicky, associate vp for benefits planning at Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. in Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Towarnicky, who represents employers, was Business Insurance’s 2008 Benefit Manager of the Year.

Other new members of the council, each of whom will serve three-year terms, are Anna Rappaport, founder of a consulting firm in Chicago bearing her name and former worldwide partner at Mercer L.L.C.; Mildeen Worrell of Chevy Chase, Md., a former House Ways and Means Committee benefits tax counsel; Michael Sasso, principal and co-founder of Portfolio Evaluations Inc. in Warren, N.J.; and Denise Clark, the founder of a Washington law firm bearing her name.

Ms. Rappaport will represent the actuarial consulting industry; Ms. Worrell will represent the general public; Mr. Sasso, the investment consulting industry; and Ms. Clark, employees.
