Following is a list of the judges who chose the 2009 European Risk Manager of the Year:
PAUL TAYLOR is director of risk assurance at Morgan Crucible Co. P.L.C. and the first winner of the Business Insurance European Risk Manager of the Year award, when he was director of group risk management and insurance at Pully, Switzerland-based packaging company Tetra Laval International S.A. Mr. Taylor also is also a former vp and current director of the Federation of European Risk Management Assns.
THIERRY VAN SANTEN is director general and chief executive officer of Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (France). Mr. Van Santen was Business Insurance European Risk Manager of the Year in 2008 while executive vp of business risk management at French food company Groupe DANONE. He also is a former FERMA president and founding member of the Assn. pour le Management des Risques et des Assurances de l'Enterprise, serving as AMRAE's president from 1992 to 1998.
STEFAN SIGULLA is CEO of insurance at Siemens Financial Services GmbH and president of the German insurance buyers association, Deutscher Versicherungs-Schutzverband e.V. Mr. Sigulla was elected to Business Insurance's European Risk Management Honor Roll in 2008 and is a director of FERMA.
JULIA GRAHAM is chief risk officer of DLA Piper U.K. L.L.P. and former chairman of U.K. Assn. of Insurance and Risk Managers. Ms. Graham was elected to the BI European Risk Management Honor Roll in 2008.
MARIE GEMMA DEQUAE retired recently as group risk and insurance manager at N.V. Bekaert S.A., a Kortrijk, Belgium-based metals group, and as president of FERMA, a post she had held since 2005. She also is a past president of the Belgian Risk Management Assn.
ALAN FLEMING is the former risk manager of brewer Guinness P.L.C. and a former chairman and executive director of AIRMIC. He also was insurance director of the Guernsey Financial Services Commission and managing director in the strategic account management unit at Aon Ltd. in London.
RALF OELSSNER recently retired as risk manager of German airline Lufthansa A.G., for which he is a nonexecutive director of the group captive insurance operation Delvag. Mr. Oelssner was chairman of Germany's DVS for nine years before handing over the reins to Stefan Sigulla in 2008. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award at the first BI European Risk Manager of the Year award at the 2007 FERMA Forum.
PIERRE SONIGO is the former group and environmental risk manager at Pechiney Groupe and director of risk and insurance at Paris manufacturer Saint-Gobain, and current general secretary of FERMA.
EDUARDO ROMERO VILLAFRANCA is the first vp of the Asociación Española de Gerencia de Riesgos y Seguros, the Spanish association of risk and insurance management, and was AGERS' chairman from 1999 to 2003. He previously was corporate risk manager of Spain's Dragados Group and subsequently KRBC Construction. Mr. Romero is a former FERMA board member and chaired its 2001 Forum in Barcelona, Spain.
