In 2009, the Asociación Española de Gerencia de Riesgos y Seguros celebrates its 25th anniversary, an achievement that will be reflected in all the activities of the association this year. Miguel Ángel Macías, who took over as AGERS president from Eduardo Romero Villafranca in 2008, said he wants to give the risk management profession a higher profile in Spain. He also wants to target wider audiences and encourage growth in the association's membership.
In 2008, AGERS rebranded, changed its logo and launched several initiatives.
It appointed Javier Navas Olóriz, one of Spain's most experienced risk managers, as executive director, and launched an annual $23,940 (€18,000) prize for risk management research.Named after Julio Sáez--a former chairman of AGERS and director of insurance at Madrid, Spain-based retail group El Corte Inglés, who died in 2006--the prize is awarded in March.
One area in which AGERS has made significant progress is education. Last year, it signed an agreement with the Madrid-based institution Universidad Pontificia Comillas to develop research and eventually offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the subject. Talks also are under way with Instituto de Ciencias del Seguro. And an agreement to offer a master's degree in risk management was signed with Escuela de Negocios de Dirección y Administración de Empresas, a business school based in Murcia, Spain, in 2007. The association also has pursued a higher degree of interaction with organizations representing insurance brokers, auditors and other experts. It holds lectures and discussions on selected topics for members, in addition to the annual conference in May and renewals conference in November.

In 2008, AIRMIC was involved in several market initiatives and consultation exercises with regulators.
In December 2008, the association agreed with brokers and insurers a statement of principles on reservation of rights, whereby carriers will--where possible--not issue reservation of rights for 90 days after receipt of a claim. Also in cooperation with brokers and insurers, AIRMIC continues to work on its proposed claims performance index, planned to go live in 2009.
The association has been in consultation with the U.K. regulator, the London-based Financial Services Authority, on the issue of broker transparency. It was in talks with the Brussels, Belgium-based European Commission on its competition investigation into the subscription insurance market. During the past year, AIRMIC has delivered several benefits to its members in the form of studies and research.
In 2008, it published the findings of its 12-month study into the benefits of enterprise risk management, based on case studies of five large organizations and analysis of another 20 companies. And, in cooperation with U.K.-based Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply, it published a guide for procurement managers to use when they purchase insurance. AIRMIC also has started working with New York-based Advisen Ltd., a provider of benchmarking services to the global commercial insurance industry, to provide program benchmarking to buyers of insurance in the United Kingdom.
In January 2007, AIRMIC established Risk Publishing Online, a provider of online risk management training. Headed by former AIRMIC Executive Director David Gamble, it already has launched PRORIM and intends to develop further courses, products and information on risk in the future.

The Association pour le Manage-ment des Risques et des Assurances de l'Entreprise started operation in May 1993 after two risk and insurance-buying bodies, the Association Professionnelle des Chargés de la Gestion des Risques et des Assurances des Entreprises Françaises and the Groupement des Assurés du Commerce et de l'Industrie merged to create a national association.
In 2004, AMRAE opened to associate members, including brokers, insurers and risk consultants. The association has 570 members from more than 335 different public and private businesses.
AMRAE has various committees and working groups and offers training to its members. Training is a priority for the coming year, according to the association's president Gérard Lancner.
The association also has launched a "Risk Observatory" in conjunction with several partners to enable risk managers and other experts to understand, detect and anticipate risks.
Last year, AMRAE began a series of events called Zoom AMRAE to discuss hot topics. The association also recently unveiled a survey, the Baromètre du Risk Manager, which asked risk managers about their roles, strategic influence and pay, among other things.
AMRAE is a member of the Federation of European Risk Management Associations.
The exchange of information and experiences between members enables members to increase their professionalism and credibility with the aim of better protecting their company's results and optimizing the cost of risk for their organization, according to AMRAE.
In 2006, AMRAE signed a joint charter with the Paris-based Fédération Française des Courtiers d'Assurances et de Réassurances, which set out rules for the conduct of buyers and brokers in the insurance-buying process.

APOGERIS was founded in 2002 by a group of risk managers and service providers, and is based in Porto. Its goals are to promote the profession of risk management as a discipline and contribute to raising standards among its practitioners. This year will continue to bring important challenges to the risk management community, said António Negreiros Fernandes, secretary general at APOGERIS.
The Portuguese and other European economies will suffer severely from the economic downturn and the companies with the best risk management tools and process will be least affected.
For public companies, it is already compulsory to have some risk management mechanisms in place. The issue for APOGERIS continues to be how to bring risk management to the majority of small- and medium-sized Portuguese companies, especially as the international financial crisis has put more pressure on cost cutting, he said.
