U.K.-based Fitch Ratings Ltd. said that alternative capital and insurance-linked securities market are likely to influence how much reinsurance and retrocession rates climb in 2018, Artemis.bm reports. The "amount of capital that remains trapped by protracted litigation, particularly in relation to hurricane Harvey flooding losses, will also determine the degree that rates rise," the ratings agency said. Capitalization of big reinsurers remains strong and will influence rates, as it is hard to see reinsurers push for large price increases while they still return excess capital to their shareholders, Fitch added.
