Oil spill victims file lawsuit against Shell over $3.6-billion compensation

Oil spill victims under the aegis of Oil Spill Victims Vanguard have filed a lawsuit in the United Kingdom against oil and gas firm Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Co. over alleged compensation of more than $3.6 billion, TheGuardian reported. Harrison Jalla, executive director of vanguard, said that Shell Nigeria's Bonga Oil Field discharged more than 10,000 barrels of crude oil into the Atlantic Ocean in December 2011 due to equipment failure. The spill spread across185 kilometers along the coastline and affected fishermen, farmlands and vegetation in Bayelsa State and other regions, Mr. Jalla said.
