Forest fires sweep across Europe, driven by urbanization, climate change

Johann Georg Goldammer, director of the Germany-based Global Fire Monitoring Center, said that rapid urbanization and climate change are major drivers of forest fires in southern Europe, Reliefweb reported, citing Euronews. An area the size of Luxembourg was destroyed by 677 forest fires this year across the European Union, an increase of 215% over the yearly average between 2008 and 2016.
