Michel Lies, chief executive officer of Swiss Reinsurance Co. Ltd. has called for the formation of a special infrastructure asset class that would permit insurers to invest in infrastructure projects, reports Bloomberg.

Regulators of the insurance and reinsurance market could "define infrastructure investment as a specified class which allows a secondary market," said Mr. Lies. Insurers and reinsurers have been seeking alternative opportunities as low interest rates affect their earnings from fixed-income investments, added Mr. Lies.
