Japan: Upcoming clean-up activity at Fukushima nuclear plant poses high risk

Operators of the disabled Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan are getting ready to remove 400 tons of highly irradiated spent fuel from a damaged building, Reuters reported.

Arnie Gundersen, director of Fairewinds Energy Education, said if the fuel assembly breaks, there will be a large release of radiation. This could result in a disaster worse than the March 2011 nuclear crisis at the Fukushima plant. Independent consultants Mycle Schneider and Antony Froggatt said in a report "full release from the Unit-4 spent fuel pool" could result in "the most serious radiological disaster to date."
