Food and Drug Administration inspectors found “objectionable conditions” at 30 recently visited compounding pharmacies.
Recall the compounding pharmacy implicated in the deadly fungal meningitis outbreak last year.
The conditions recently observed at the 30 inspected compounding pharmacies included “unidentified black particles floating in vials of supposedly sterile medicine; rust and mold in ‘clean rooms, ’technicians handling supposedly sterile products with bare hands, according to an April 11, blog posting from FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg.
“These inspectional observations reveal that there continues to be reason for concern about sterility deficiencies and other problems in some compounding pharmacies across the country,” Ms. Hamburg wrote in her blog available here.
Compound prescriptions account for only a small percentage of all pharmaceuticals prescribed to injure workers. But there costs are much higher than normally available drugs and safety issues obviously continue to be a concern for those workers receiving them.
