BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

California’s COVID-19 workers compensation claims for accident year 2020 totaled more than 103,000 — with coronavirus claims accounting for one of six injury claims — according to data released Wednesday from the California Workers Compensation Institute.

The COVID-19 figures, based on claims reported to the California Division of Workers Compensation, show that 51% of all workers compensation claims in December were for COVID-19, up from 29% in November, which had the second-highest percentage of COVID-19-related claims.

The report also noted that workers compensation claims for the fourth quarter of 2020 totaled 166,587 — an increase of 3.2% over the workers comp claim volume for the same quarter in 2019.

In the state, COVID-19 claims were most often filed by health care workers and first responders, and the claim volume for workers in those industries held steady much of the year. The retail sector was the third most likely to file coronavirus claims among business sectors, and that industry’s share of claims jumped to 13.1% in December from 8.7% in October.

With coronavirus claims for 2020 continuing to be filed, the CWCI predicts that the ultimate COVID-19 workers comp claim count will be around 43,000 and a 2020 total of nearly 118,000.
