BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Rogue bat, sunglass-munching monkey enliven 2018 travel claims

Vacation tip: Don’t forget to pack a travel insurance policy, because you never know when a monkey is gonna eat your sunglasses.

New Zealand’s Southern Cross Travel Insurance, a subsidiary of Southern Cross Benefits Ltd., has released its 2018 list of unusual claims, with cases involving animals dominating the lineup, according to an article in Monday’s New Zealand Herald.

One customer in Asia filed a $379 claim for a rabies shot after waking to find a bat in their hotel room. The winged critter was trapped inside and the customer reportedly spent 10 minutes trying to shoo it away with a pillow, the newspaper reported.

Another customer traveling in Asia was reimbursed $359 after having his glasses stolen by a monkey at a temple, watching helplessly as the “aggressive” primate fended him off and ate the spectacles.

"I had absolutely no idea monkeys could act like that, but I see the funny side of it now," he told the insurer, according to the article.

Southern Cross Chief Executive Chris White said, "After 35 years of operation, you might think we've heard it all, but we're still surprised by some of the claims we receive each year.”
