BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Would-be insurance commissioner not your average candidate

A North Carolina construction company owner previously accused of insurance fraud is now seeking a job as head of the state's insurance department.

Ronald Pierce is owner of Charlotte, North Carolina-based Clear Choice Construction L.L.C., according to his campaign website. The North Carolina Department of Insurance charged him last year with 108 counts of obtaining property by false pretense, alleging that he inflated hail damage repair estimates to homeowners and received $450,000 in fraudulent claim payments from the insurers, according to a statement from the department.

The charges were dismissed due to insufficient evidence, the Charlotte Observer newspaper said in a recent report. Mr. Pierce now has channeled his ire from facing the dropped charges to run for North Carolina insurance commissioner in the state's 2016 election.

“These charges were a direct result of my many complaint letters to the North Carolina Department of Insurance and the Attorney Generals Office demanding an investigation into these insurance companies and the people at the Department of Insurance,” Mr. Pierce said of the dropped charges on his campaign website. “There was no investigation into my complaints against the insurance companies. The only thing that got investigated was me.”

Mr. Pierce is the author of a yet-to-be available book called “Pissed Off,” which names the North Carolina Department of Insurance, the North Carolina Attorney General's Office and insurance companies to a “permanent list” of people that have left him frustrated, according to his website.
